Should I Get Circumcised as an Adult?

Should I Get Circumcised as an Adult?

Over half of all newborn baby boys are circumcised — that means millions didn’t undergo the procedure.

Don’t worry. You may have missed the boat as a baby, but you’re not out of luck. Adult circumcision is common and safe, and our experts at Golden Gate Urology in Berkeley, California, are here to help you determine if it’s right for you.

Here’s a closer look at what’s involved to help you decide your next steps.

Is adult circumcision right for you?

Thankfully, there’s usually no medical pressure to get circumcised. Even at birth, the choice to circumcise or not is often dictated by societal norms, religious convictions, and cultural influences.

However, men who weren’t circumcised as babies often become self-conscious, especially if men around them have been. On top of that, there’s a link between circumcision and reduced risk of health threats, including:

Whether you’re concerned for your future health or you want to feel more confident, adult circumcision is likely an option for you.

What can you expect from adult circumcision?

Adult circumcision is a quick, low-risk, routine procedure. It begins with a consultation with one of our experts. We discuss your family and personal medical history, goals, and expectations before setting an appointment for the procedure.

Your surgeon numbs and cleans the end of your penis, then places a sterile clamp around the head of your penis to separate it from the skin. They carefully remove the foreskin with a scalpel and/or surgical scissors.

Your surgeon finishes by suturing or cauterizing the wound closed. Finally, they wrap your penis in a protective dressing to keep it clean while it heals.

The procedure takes 30-60 minutes.

How long does it take to recover from adult circumcision?

It’s common to experience some swelling and bruising after your procedure, but any side effects or discomfort is easy to manage with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication.

Invest in support undergarments to help reduce swelling and pain during healing. Keep the area as clean and dry as possible.

Attend your follow-up appointment to have the dressing removed and your incisions checked for infection and proper healing. On average, recovery from adult circumcision takes 4-6 weeks.

We recommend you avoid strenuous physical exercise, masturbation, and sexual intercourse until you’ve fully healed.

A decision on adult circumcision is a significant moment in your life. Don’t make it alone. Our compassionate, trustworthy team can walk you through what to expect and whether it’s right for you. Call our friendly staff at 510-255-0013 or schedule your consultation online today.
